OVERVIEW
Little Outdoor Giants’ mission is to create unique, curated, and curious lifestyle imagery that is hinged on authenticity and a desire to live an aesthetic life and to tell beautifully stylized stories. We are excited for an opportunity to showcase our work with a brand we believe shares our values too, and we can’t wait to create with Kuhl.
WORKFLOW
How we work together as a duo is unique and it has several iterations based on the needs of each production. We are both trained photographers and directors with interchangeable skills, providing the very best experience and value while on set together.
We approach each project keeping production in mind and are always asking ourselves how can we most easily achieve the needs of our client while maintaining the highest level of creativity and output. We are dedicated to pre-production and the techscout, using that time to explore potential locations, dial in camera angles and workflow so that come shoot day we are able to be spontaneous and creative to the shots and with the talent, all while creating a fun and authentic atmosphere for the talent and ultimately, the images.
LOCATION 01 | Portland Maine
We recommend shooting one day in and around Portland Maine. There are so many opportunities for an aesthetically beautiful and textured urban environment, for coastal hikes along rocky outcroppings into the sea, and evergreen forest hikes and quiet landscapes to explore. We typically try to shoot in 2-3 locations (within a central location) per day to get a varied look and feel and vast options. Given the Kuhl photo direction, our one concern is that shooting in any place in New England in February the color scheme will be blues and greys and browns, certainly minimal on the greens and we will keep this in mind as we are shooting for spring transition images.
Just outside and around Portland are some great rocky sea scapes. It’s a classic Maine look fit for hiking and scrambling with the color of the ocean in the background
It being wintery right now, we’d try to do some forest hiking in areas that have predominantly evergreens. There are a bunch of forest and coastal trails within a short distance of Portland that can provide what we need, especially for the product detail and upclose/portrait shots with hints of a green environment.
Hiking and wandering the seacoast
Two friends drive to the sea coast, exploring the rocks and beaches, both alone and together. Shot ideas include landscapes with folks in them, upclose details and portraits, getting ready with a vehicle near the seascape, pouring a thermos of hot tea, etc..
Adventuring Outdoors
Friends head out on a getaway adventure, wandering, canoeing or kayaking, walking along forested trails by the water, sitting and enjoying a campfire. We see moments of adventure, of excitement, and quiet solitude.
Downtown Portland has some great brick, cobble, and building textures to give a hint of urban life. It has a young, hip, mountain town vibe, with some small tech companies and cool looking folks with great style all around a gritty waterfront too.
There are also Ferries headed out to some of the small community islands in Casco Bay, we were thinking of showing a journey of a couple with their bikes, whether daily commuting to the city for work or to look like an early spring weekend getaway. The textures of the ferries mixed with the landscape of the sea and coast will help show off the apparels ability to keep warm and dry in harsh conditions.
Biking in an urban environment
Biking through the city of Portland, catching textures and motion, and in-between moments on the sidewalks while commuting. This can include riding and boarding a ferry with bikes, details and close up portraits, as well as both energetic riding moments, and in between lifestyle and detail moments within an urban environment.
Cabin Life & Sailing
An option to add to the production value might be using opportunities to be on boats, in and around cabins by water and including all that that entails. Details of handling ropes and lines, of boarding a boat, of chopping wood and building a fire, of carrying bags from the adventure mobile to the weekend getaway cabin etc.
LOCATION 02 | Cape Cod and Provincetown
We’d also recommend shooting on the Outer Cape Cod and Provincetown. Provincetown is a quaint and small New England village that has great wooden and seaside textures, brick sidewalks, classic architecture, and just enough infrastructure to feel like a hip young city, all right up against the sea. Outside and surrounding the Provincetown area are long wooded walks through pitch pine and evergreen forests, with mossy underbrush and sandy hills and dunes, as well as epic sea cliffs looking out over the ocean for those grander landscaped views. The opportunities for outdoor activities here are endless, biking, hiking, canoe and kayaking, camp fires, fishing and shellfishing are all widely available. Similar to Portland (and anywhere else in New England in February) the color tones will be more blues and greys and browns with muted and dark greens of some grasses and evergreen tree’s, to keep in mind.
Oystering on the Sea
Oystering can be done by hand simply by walking through the lowtide coastal flats and filling a bucket at leisure. Additionally many professional oystermen gather at lowtide with their trucks and load them up from their plots. The draw of either one is a grand open sky, water to the horizon, and so many hues of natural color surrounding you, along with great textural details of oyster equipment, buckets, oyster knives and rubber boots etc.
Fishing Cape Cod Waters
Fishing along the coast, kayaking into bays, or casting from shore, Cape Cod is a great adventure hub mixing beautiful natural landscapes with different types of water, freshwater ponds, tiny streams, myriad bays, and open ocean along wide sandy beaches.
Hiking the Sand dunes and Sea Cliffs
Hiking along the Cape Cod seashore you can weave in and out of Evergreen forests of pitch pine and scrub oak, along 100 foot high cliffs with sea grass and views across the ocean. We envision a couple enjoying wandering along the cliffs and trails of Cape Cod being a great opportunity to showcase how to remain warm and dry even in this beautiful, yet exposed, environment.
Biking, Hiking, Camping
Other opportunities to get great imagery along the Cape can be from biking on side trails, hiking in the forest and swamps along trails and boardwalks, and setting up a camp scene with tents, campfires, and enjoying the outdoor lifestyle in comfort. We see opportunities to get may inbetween moments, not just activity, with simple propping of camping setups, cooking and warming outdoors, and a general relatable outdoor vibe.
LOG Imagery
Our goal is to show hints of story, of location, of narrative, using talent and Kuhl wardrobe, as well as light propping, locations, texture, movement, gesture, and authentic inbetween moments to showcase the accessability and versatility of Kuhl Apparel.
